THIS MONTH'S ENVIRONMENTAL AND OR SAFETY TOPIC

1. The construction industry is responsible for environmental impacts that include air emissions, waste generation, and the use of land, water, and energy.

2. Existing estimates of energy use and environmental emissions for the industry are tied to large construction vehicles, but other equipment consumes energy in various forms.
3. Energy on a construction site is usually provided by gasoline and diesel fuel, electricity, and natural gas. Of these four energy sources, diesel fuel and electricity are responsible for the greatest total air emissions
4. The construction industry creates a litany of environmental impacts, partly due to its large consumption of energy. Studies indicate that fuel use estimates for construction equipment are almost double the levels suggested by government reports;
5. Some of the major environmental impacts of the construction process have to do with storm water management, demolition debris, and energy consumption
6. Our Environment is our heritage to our children and as such we now in our industry have to make sure that it is protected and cared for at all times by:
➢ Protection of our fauna and flora
➢ Waste management: Keep your working space clean at all times and recycle where needed. Cigarette butts must be disposed into designated bins.
➢ Preventing pollution of water and ground (soil)
➢ Control dust, noise and air pollution, smoke in designated areas.
➢ Keep to set roads and do not of road driving
➢ Use protective equipment to minimize spills
➢ Store all hazardous material like fuel and chemicals in a secure space which is water proof.
➢ Do not leave a footprint in areas which should not be disturbed
➢ Do not mix cement or concrete directly on the ground, but on a waterproof surface as to prevent concrete water and sludge to filter into the soil
➢ Always remember animals have the right of way and plants may not be disturbed.
7. Current and future generations of Namibian have a right to an environment which provides for their health and well-being and security, and to share access to all of Namibia’s resources and this means it is the duty of all to protect and conserve Namibia’s environment
